GRIHA Rating | Green Building Certificate

GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), a green building certification system in India.

What is GRIHA?

GRIHA is a national rating system developed by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) and adopted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. It evaluates the environmental performance of buildings throughout their entire life cycle, setting benchmarks for what constitutes a 'green building'.

Objectives of GRIHA

The primary goal of GRIHA is to minimize resource consumption, waste generation, and the overall ecological impact of buildings. It encourages sustainable practices in building design and operation, aiming to create structures that are environmentally friendly and resource efficient.

Certification Process

Eligibility: All new construction projects with a built-up area of more than 2,500 m² are eligible for GRIHA certification.
Registration: The project team initiates the registration process online, followed by an orientation workshop conducted by GRIHA Council officials.
Site Visits: GRIHA Council officials conduct site visits to validate sustainable measures during construction.
Documentation: The project team submits documentation for all criteria on the GRIHA online panel.
Evaluation: A team of professionals from GRIHA Council and external evaluators carries out the preliminary evaluation.

Benefits of GRIHA Certification

Environmental Impact: Reduces the building's ecological footprint by promoting sustainable practices.
Financial Incentives: Various municipal corporations and authorities offer financial incentives for GRIHA-compliant projects.
Recognition: GRIHA is internationally recognized as a tool for promoting sustainable development and implementing renewable energy in the building sector.

In conclusion, GRIHA certification is a comprehensive system that ensures buildings are designed and operated sustainably. By adhering to GRIHA standards, buildings can significantly reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a greener future.
